On Running

Switzerland is one of the most innovative countries in the world and this also holds true when it comes to running shoe technology, as the young label On Running impressively proves. After retiring from professional competition, multiple World Duathlon Champion and six-time Ironman Winner Olivier Bernhard set off on a quest for the perfect running sensation. Together with like-minded ETH engineer David Allemann, he developed a revolutionary running shoe technology over several years that began by amazing the sporting scene and has since helped numerous top athletes to new personal bests – the Cloudtec system. The name says it all: it is like running on clouds –lighter, more comfortably and more efficiently. It’s hard to believe that this fantastic success story began with a cut-up garden hose.

On Running

The concept of the Cloudtec technology is as simple as it is ingenious: cushioned landing, firm takeoff. The cushioning of the first prototype was made by slicing up a garden hose and supergluing the segments onto the soles of the shoe. In 2010, the creative friends eventually founded the On Running company whose declared aim is to make running fun again. On Running had a real breakthrough when a prototype won the ispo BrandNew Award that same year and marathon legend Tegla Loroupe became an enthusiastic ambassador for the brand. Today, shoes of this innovative label are available in more than 25 countries. In addition to its European headquarters in Zurich, On Running has opened a second head office in Portland, USA, a mecca in the sporting goods industry.

No matter whether you’re a running beginner, hobby jogger or competitive athlete, every runner is unique. This makes it all the more difficult to develop a running shoe technology which embraces the diversity of millions of individual runners. This is where the patented Cloudtec system comes into play: Instead of a rigid sole, a whole team of highly adaptive rubber elements (Clouds) at the outsole of the shoe actively reacts to your individual running motion. When the foot hits the ground, the Clouds cushion both vertical and horizontal forces for a soft landing and then lock firm to provide a solid foundation for a direct and powerful takeoff. In this way, On Running shoes provide a completely new and totally natural running sensation and, at the same time, activate the postural muscles and stabilise the foot strike without artificial support, thus avoiding injuries and pain. Meanwhile, On Running offers a wide range of ultra-light running shoes for all levels, from generously cushioned entry-level models such as the Cloudster to fast performance running shoes such as the Cloudracer. And as if that weren’t enough, some particularly popular styles such as the Cloud have found their way into the sneaker stores, giving some serious competition to lifestyle shoes. Reason enough for us to add this exceptional Swiss brand to our range of products!
