Collonil

COLLONIL is THE brand for shoe care products which is sold worldwide, but nevertheless stands for quality products “Made in Germany”. Especially people from abroad and also Germans consider this seal a sign of quality and reliability. State-of-the-art technologies and carefully selected raw materials are used for the production so that the products deliver what they promise. In 1918, Karl Esslen, together with the two brothers Paul and Walter Salzenbrodt, founded the Esslen & Co GmbH in Berlin and so laid the foundation for COLLONIL. Despite hard times during the First World War, COLLONIL shoe care products for leather and textile proved sustainable.

The founders soon broadened the product range so Berlin quickly became too small. That’s why they moved to larger premises in Mühlenbeck east of Berlin. At the beginnings of the 1930s, Esslen and the Salzenbrodt brothers opened their first branch in Vienna where they manufactured climbing and skiing products. Unfortunately, Paul Salzenbrodt died unexpectedly in 1935, leaving a wide gap in the company. In the turmoil of World War II, the company was only allowed to continue production under strict regulations since they were allowed to produce only what was necessary. But the factories in Mühlenbeck and Vienna, fortunately, weren’t affected by the hail of bombs. Germany being divided, the company was situated in the Soviet Zone, which later became the German Democratic Republic, and was nationalised. That’s why Walter Salzenbrodt decided to relocate its business to the south of Berlin.

In the post war period, people again got interested in fashion so that COLLONIL experienced a boom. In the 1950s, the demand for shoe care products increased also on the overseas market and COLLONIL series has been able to establish its reputation worldwide. Grown old, Walter Salzenbrodt eventually passed the management to younger family members. The company made a final move to Berlin Wittenau then where it is still located today. The Vienna branch also moved and expanded in 1958. Walter Salzenbrodt died at the beginning of the 1960s. COLLONIL France and COLLONIL Denmark were established in 1972 and a completely new product was launched in the 1970s, too: the COLLONIL Self Shine had a sponge applicator and rendered cloth and brush redundant – it was a real bestseller. At the end of the 1990s the company also established on the Chinese market. Frank Becker took over the management in 1998 and the introduction of the COLLONIL Premium Line in 2001 clearly proved popular. COLLONIL Car Care was launched shortly afterwards. Care products for motorcycle clothing followed in 2003. By 2006 the range of products has been broadened to include insoles, shoe trees and foot care products. The Nanotech line has become a real commercial success. Then, in 2009, the company celebrated its centenary, launching the COLLONIL 1909 product line in honour of this occasion.
